Summary on "Folk!"
“Folk!“
explores the unique underground world of traditional Ukrainian Folk Dance
in North America, emphasizing the music, dance, costumes, and personalities
of the Ukrainian people. Character driven with an emphasis on the Syzokryli
dancers and Roma Pryma Bohachevsky, “Folk!” will be the first
film to be a joyful embracement of Ukrainian culture and dance in America
today.
History of "Folk!"
After a five-year break from
the Ukrainian Folk Dancing world, filmmaker Roxy Toporowych joined the
Syzokryli Dance Ensemble of New York in September of 2002. Months later,
she realized the potential for a film following the lives of the dancers
and their matriarch Roma Pryma Bohachevsky. Roxy began taking her camera
to rehearsals, and documenting this passionate ensemble. Two and a half
years into the process, a full-length documentary was born. In that time,
a creative parnership with audio engineer and cinematographer Jeremy McCarter
was also formed, bringing the documentary to a new level and pushing its
scope outside of the studio and into the lives of the folk dancers.
As word spread about Folk!,
ensembles throughout the US and Ukraine added to the project, granting
full access to their rehearsals and performances. These troupes include
Voloshky of Philadelphia,
Kashtan of Cleveland, Obrij
of New York/New Jersey, Virsky of Kiev (Ukraine), and Unist of Lviv (Ukraine).
Also, creative talents such as composer Kruno Spisic and editor Eric Gold,
as well as countless friends and family members have come on board, dedicating
their time to Folk! Currently in the long phase of editing and
post-production, Folk! hopes to meet its Spring 2005 deadline.
